Remembrance
In the 1990s I was moved to consider the price and the commemoration of war. There were very few combatants left from WW1 and, having had the privilege of knowing my own grandfather, a survivor of the trenches, I arrived at this work. A combined admiration of medieval reliquaries, Japanese art and the familiar poppy formed the work. The viewer peers through a spy hole in one end and a poppy tunnel is seen to curve off into the distance. This visual curve led me to consider how wide the circle of poppies might actually be if they existed in space. I had in mind the Lutyens cenotaph with its sloping edges designed to meet a mile above the ground.
